As I was catching up with old colleagues, I started thinking about how smart control of heating systems could improve our lives. After some online research, I stumbled upon Tado - a product that seemed like exactly what we needed. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive, and ease of installation was definitely a strong point for me. In fact, the wired thermostat starter kit, an add-on wired thermostat, and seven smart thermostatic radiator valves all performed seamlessly together to control temperatures in downstairs rooms and make it possible to turn on and off heating upstairs.

The installation process was incredibly effortless - I followed the instructions for the wired thermostat with ease, and fitting the thermostatic valves to replace the original units was a simple matter. We've been running our Tado system for a few weeks now, and it's truly impressed us with its performance. Prior to installing the system, we were using different methods to control heating in our downstairs rooms - often times we'd be stuck with 25 C+ living room temperatures due to open fires and central heating. Now, with the Rado smart radiator valves, the temperature is regulated to a comfortable level of 22C.

We also appreciate how easily we can turn off unused rooms using the Rado app. This feature would not have been possible in the past - it was far too much hassle to go to individual rooms and adjust the thermostatic valves manually. We're so impressed with Tado's performance that we've decided to order additional radiator thermostatic valves for our upstairs radiators.

I spent £420 on a smart radiator starter kit, thermostat, and three smart radiator valves, consulting with Tado on the best setup for my home, which was recommended by their online registration and system installation process, which went smoothly and was easy to use, despite initial reservations about investing in any more components. I set up three zones, including the living room with a smart thermostat, family room with two smart radiator valves on both radiators, and bedroom with one smart radiator valve, and connected my internet bridge and paired all the components. I then downloaded the Tado App on my iPhone to program the zones for different times and temperatures, which was straightforward enough, although I did discover that a few adapters were required for certain components. Programming the system took only a few minutes of initial setup, followed by some time spent downloading and installing the app. The schedule was set to warm the bedrooms and family rooms before the living room, but ended up being quite cold in the morning despite this.

I noticed that manually starting the living room by increasing the set temperature above the actual recorded temperature seemed to be causing the system to malfunction, and I tried programming it for a different time and temperature, which also didn't work. The zone with the smart room thermostat was calling for heat before any other zones even though their smart radiator valves were calling for heat, which made me think that there might be an issue with Tado's setup. It seemed to be getting worse every day, with more frequent cold starts in the morning.

I tried contacting Tado customer support multiple times but only received automated responses and messages saying that they had changed my system to prevent it from firing up short. I sent an email asking for help, but didn't receive a response or any updates on how things were going. A satisfaction request was sent, even though they hadn't resolved the issue yet, which was frustrating.

The system worked fine during the day, with noticeable temperature variations before and after starting it up again to heat the living room. I checked the actual room temperatures using a separate thermometer and found that there were significant differences from the Tado set point temperatures. To compensate, I adjusted the offset on each device to monitor the room temperature, but this was still not ideal.

In summary, installation setup and programming worked well in principle, although functionality was a different story. The problem resolution and support by Tado left a lot to be desired, and I was hoping for a more satisfactory experience given my initial investment.

One of our biggest upgrades has been installing a total of 10 tado° smart radiator thermostats throughout the house, and honestly, it's one of the best decisions we've made as a family.

We'd always struggled with temperature control in each room - especially when we had a toddler and baby at home. Being able to tailor the heat precisely to what needed it would make all the difference, especially during unpredictable UK weather.
